Minnesota roofing tips - What are the best shingles for your home?

There are generally five different types of roofing shingles:

  1. Asphalt. These are the most common type of shingle. They are the most inexpensive roofing shingle that come in an architectual or three tab style. Of the two, the architectual style is more expensive. Asphalt shingles also have a shorter life span of only 20-30 years instead of 50 like some others.

  2. Wood. The most natural looking shingle and more expensive than asphalt. They commonly come in cedar and redwood and can last up to a 50 year life span. Not only are the cost of the shingles themselves more expensive, they are also expensive to install.

  3. Metal. This roofing shingle is rather inexpensive and is becoming more common. Metal is a good shingle for a flat or very steep roof lines and can last up to 50 years. Another nice feature with this shingle is that they are fire resistant.

  4. Slate. This material is very sturdy and also has a life span up to 50 years. Slate is more expensive but it is possible to find a synthetic version but may not be as durable as the real deal.

  5. Tile. As far as roofing shingles go, tile lasts the longest and is by far the most expensive. This is a very common shingle on homes in southwestern states and Mexico. It’s a very heavy shingle so it’s important to know if your home structurally stable enough to hold them.

Many other things to consider would be color and size of each different type of shingle. Figuring out the best option for the climate for which you live and what would be the most cost effective for you. If you are trying to be ‘green’ there is an organic option but they will most definitely not last as long. So in the long run you may save the earth but not save any money.
