Contractor Warranties
Finding a good and trustworthy contractor may be difficult to begin with, so it’s important to understand their warranties. Something may not turn out or work as planned and a good contractor will stick with the warranty and come back to repair or change it to what you desired. Most contractor warranties are for up to a year after your last payment. And most of them are to cover something defective in the material(s) used and any mistakes the contractor themselves made.
An example of a material defect could be anything from plumbing issues to a short in a wire to appliance malfunctions. These things are out of the contractor’s control as to why they didn’t work but they can replace the product to fix the problem.
If the contractor or their team made a mistake like hit a pipe or drilled into something they shouldn’t have, it’s their responsibility to fix it.
There are a few things that the contractor warranty does not cover. A big one is a natural disaster; look into your homeowners insurance for that one. After the project is complete and you decide to tweak something, don’t expect the contractor to fix something you changed. They will mostly likely know they didn’t do it. And the obvious reason of wear and tear is also your responsibility.
Make sure you read your contract in its entirety and understand it fully. Read reviews on your contractor and do research to find a good one. Renovations, remodels and new builds are huge investments so take the time to know who your contractor is. The warranty is as good as the contractor.
