Checklist for Choosing the Right Roofing Company

Here are 5 of the most important things you should know, when you choosing the right roofing contractor!

  1. Does the contractor meet or exceed the local building codes: Building codes are there for a reason, and roofing codes are meant to keep your home dry and healthy. Not following the codes can often cause problems that sometimes don't show up for years.

  2. Did you get a detailed estimate that defines exactly what you are getting? They say "the devil's in the details". Roofing estimates should be detailed. They should tell you exactly what you are buying and how it is being applied to your home. If your estimate can double as a napkin or has a sticky side, it's not detailed enough.

  3. Did the contractor even inspect your roof? I'm not just talking, looking at it from the ground. I mean getting on the roof, in the attic, through the insulation, around the vents and to the highest peak? Okay well maybe not to the highest peak! But you get what I mean! The roof is more than just shingles. It doesn't just keep your home dry from the outside in, but also from the inside out!

  4. Make sure the company you chose is local. There are a lot of great roofing companies that call Minnesota home. Hiring one of them should ensure that they understand what is required in our harsh climate, and if you do have issues with your new roof in the future, a local contractor will be here help you out.

  5. Make sure they have a good reputation and check references: It's easier than it's ever been to get the skinny on a contractors reputation. Almost every contractor has online reviews and if they don't, RUN! DON"T WALK! Read reviews, the good ones and the bad ones. Also ask for a list of recent customers. The more recent the better. You don't want to talk to the same "Randy" that they have been telling people to call for 14 years.
